Can't Let It Go (Frozen 2 Spoiler Review - Movie)

It's challenging to come out with a great sequel especially when the first one was a huge success. In the case of Frozen, it was a worldwide phenomenon. It had toys and other merchandise. Little girls around the world were in dresses, singing and dancing to 'Let It Go' in front of their home theatres. Cosplayers attended events as Elsa and Anna. YouTube beauty artists recorded video tutorials for Frozen make-ups. Heck, there's even a Frozen filter on TikTok. Frozen had the right combination for global appeal. The perfect recipe.

Frozen 2 attempts to maintain all the elements from the first movie while at the same time trying to be different. It starts with a flashback to a time when both the sisters were children. And then, in present time, again there's a 'magical disaster' that threatens the safety of the kingdom, a 'power ballad' where Elsa changes her appearance, a sibling's sacrifice herself in ice and the display of the power of love. Sounds a lot like the first movie, no? I felt like the movie loses (for lack of a better word) its originality. Like it was trying too hard to be its predecessor. (As I write this paragraph, I realized that there are actually some things missing from the second movie. There's not much plot twists and an absence of a proper villain).

There are new characters introduced such as Lieutenant Mattias, Yelena, Ryder and Honeymaren but they do not have much role in the movie (except probably Mattias). Olaf takes the spotlight this time though. With some memorable lines too at that. Disney probably has different plans for the others. A spin-off perhaps. Anyway, they might have crowded the merchandise range. But, I definitely want to see more of the cute little fire salamander. And I don't mind a water horse, too.

Nevertheless, Frozen 2 does explore some of the things that were left unaddressed from the previous movie, suffering a 'drag' in the process. We get to know why Elsa has magical powers, what really happened to the sisters' parents, what becomes of the relationship between Kristoff and Anna, and who ultimately rules the kingdom. Also, we can finally watch the sisters build a snowman. Ultimately, it leaves the viewers with a sense of satisfaction. Definitely, a must watch for Frozen fans.
